A Card for Zoey

I found myself rushing to pull a couple projects together for a last-minute-dash to a birthday party this afternoon. In the spirit of trying to do better in my personal gift card battle, this cutie materialized at the last possible minute and I felt a wave of relief as I realized this ribbon would work so well with the wrapping paper. I need to give serious kudos to the inventors of double-sided tape and glue dots–life wouldn’t be the same without them. Or maybe life would be pretty much the same, but most of my gifts would come without cards.

Details on the other pre-mad-dash project coming tomorrow!

Up the ‘Down’ Escalator

June 30, 2008

Wow, a big welcome to all of you who hopped over from TipJunkie last week…I’m excited to get to know you! I’m still working on some upcoming projects for One Small Child and feel a bit like I’m heading up the ‘down’ escalator, but I did manage to eke out some time to go treasure hunting over the weekend, coming up with some fun things I’ll be sharing soon.

Off topic, I took my older two kiddos (along with their cousins) to the movie this afternoon. Fun yet expensive! Does anyone else feel a little stab of pain handing over so much money for tickets and treats? Yikes! At least I got to snuggle my 4-year-old for a whole two hours…he doesn’t let me do that often, so it was well worth the investment.

Cutoffs, My Way

June 25, 2008

I think summer is FINALLY here! The long, cold spring has left me less than anxious to run out and acquire summer clothing for the kiddos, but I gave in and picked up a few things last week. Even with the new additions to our wardrobe, the rigors of potty-training seem to keep our favorites forever in laundry baskets. Today, following an ‘accident’ I pulled out a pair of barely-too-short jeans and cut them off to add to our warm weather repertoire. I didn’t feel like waiting to wash them to get the stand-by fringed denim look, so I pulled out a ribbon I’ve been dying to use and came up with this:

And here’s my favorite trick for girling up a pair of crocs:

Stay tuned…I have a stack of the PERFECT fabric for a sweet little top to go with these shorts…just have to get through those pesky work projects!

The Plant and the Kitty

I’m working on a couple of biggish projects for One Small Child, so haven’t had time to work on any of the sewing projects I’ve been wanting to tackle…guess I’ll just have to talk about other things for a few more days.

Pictured here is evidence of the fierce weather we’ve had this spring. I’m surprised this unfortunate plant isn’t more crippled for all the wind and cold it’s tolerated over the past several weeks. Here’s to hoping our current summer-like weather will continue!

Oh, and the kitty? He’s my favorite cat in the world. My grandpa made him for me out of odds and ends on the farm, and he’s been lounging on my front porch for years. Meow!

Gone with the Wind

Where did today go? (I say that far too often.) I managed to chew on several projects and make an unexpected run to town…where little Miss J insisted on coming home with these super cute fingernails. I gave in and found a few spare minutes to apply them. And how fun are they?! Adorable for the thirty minutes they lasted. At least the pictures won’t be gone with the wind. Like today.

Daddy Decorates

June 17, 2008

As I was settling in for some much-needed beauty sleep late last Saturday, I received a phone call from my husband who was on his way home from a long day at play. He mentioned a few odds & ends, then told me he found a new fan for our girls’ room. Imagine my surprise when I woke up to this! It’s pretty and pink and perfect! Even better, it puts out more air and is exponentially quieter than the plain old white beast it replaced.

The Music Bags

June 14, 2008

Two of my nieces are taking piano lessons (Yay! I wish them much more success than I achieved on the lovely instrument!), and my sister in-law asked if I’d have time to make some bags to tote their music books. It took much longer than I intended to get them finished…but I had a lot of fun with them.

The initial appliques were an inspiration. I thought for a long time about how to personalize the bags, and then the answer just popped into my head. I love it when that happens. As a bonus, I really enjoyed quilting around the letters. Hand-work always makes me feel happy and calm and entertained.

One of my favorite little girls in one of my favorite dresses from the fabulous Matilda Jane line. ‘Nuff said.

Memorial Day

Despite gloomy weather, I’m enjoying a nice quiet holiday weekend with my family, remembering loved ones gone before and feeling gratitude for the freedoms we enjoy. I wish you all the same!

The Meadow

May 25, 2008

For anyone wondering where Sage Meadow Studio comes from, this is the actual “sage meadow” next to my home. I grew up on this land. It’s been in my family for decades and it’s a part of me. I love this quiet place.

The scents of sage brush in the rain and sage mixed with dust on a hot summer day, a warm breeze carrying the light perfumed fragrance of scrubby Russian Olive trees (you can see them in the background of this picture)…these all evoke images of home and peace and carefree childhood for me, of riding on the front of my daddy’s motorcycle while he tended his water, of warm summer nights playing “No Bears are Out Tonight” or listening to the soft clicking of the sprinklers in the field next door. Ahhh. Makes me feel good just thinking about it.
